Cameron is 19, lives in Forres, and works for Moray estates in forestry.
“I’ve been at the estate now for nearly four years. I started with holiday work at school and I just never left.
I always wanted to do it as the thought of being stuck in an office was not for me.
The estate does all kinds of things, from housing to farming and forestry and game keeping.
The modern apprenticeship in trees and timber that I did was pretty enjoyable as I learned from doing the job on the ground, so my skills for doing the job improved and I got paid at the same time.
As the saying goes, there are no two days the same. My daily tasks can range from tree planting to tractor work to cutting trees, making firewood or helping at the castle and every other department.
The best thing about my job is that you can more or less guarantee that the day before will not be the same again. I really enjoy it.
I get satisfaction from knowing that people can take safe and rewarding walks through the woods thanks to my efforts.
There can be challenges when machines break down and you have to find a fast and safe way to fix them, but you have to be willing to learn and take in what other people tell you.
Everything about my job is sustainable and it’s great to live and work in this part of Scotland.
I’d recommend anyone to join this industry".
