Max Campbell: a career in greenkeeping

Max works at Prestwick Golf Club as a fully qualified Greenkeeper and says his role involves maintaining and preparing the golf course to the highest possible standards for members and visitors day each day.

"We provide a world-class golfing experience, so our greenkeeping team ensures the course is always in peak condition, meaning golfers can enjoy playing on a professionally maintained, top quality turf.

I’ve always been a keen golfer and spent a lot of time on golf courses growing up. I was fascinated by how a course is maintained and looked after. I knew I didn’t want to work in an office, and once I read more about what a greenkeeper does day to day, I knew it was the perfect fit for me.

So I started working here after finishing school. It was my first full-time role, and I’ve grown and developed within the team ever since, completing both my Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications in Golf Course Management through a Modern Apprenticeship.

I really enjoyed the learning side, as I got hands-on practical experience as well as a great understanding of the theory behind what we do every day, from turf management to machinery, pest control, and health and safety. The mix of classroom learning and on-the-job training keeps things interesting and relevant.

I now feel confident in tackling problems, knowing what checks need to be done, and how to make decisions that protect the course and those using it.

One of the best things about a Modern Apprenticeship is getting paid while you learn. You’re gaining real-world experience, learning every day, and earning at the same time. I’d recommend it to anyone.

As a Greenkeeper, my days start with a morning meeting led by our Head Greenkeeper. We go over plans for the day, which could involve anything from raking bunkers and mowing greens to cutting fairways or working on projects. Every day is different, and that’s what I love about it.

Throughout the year, we work outdoors in all weather, preparing the course for daily play, seasonal changes, and any competitions. We also carry out improvement projects whether it’s drainage work, bunker renovations, or general turf management to keep the course evolving and in top condition.

Our work ensures the course is not just playable but enjoyable and visually impressive. We also manage areas of deep rough and natural habitat zones that provide shelter for wildlife, helping support biodiversity. It’s a role that blends sport, nature, and sustainability.

Timekeeping is vital as we start at 6am. Teamwork, communication, and having a strong eye for detail and precision are all key. You also need a real passion for working outdoors and taking pride in what you do.

The best part of my job is being able to stand back after setting up an area and seeing the improvement. It’s really satisfying to know your hard work has made a difference. I absolutely love it, and from day one, I knew this was going to be my career for life.

I’m really proud of how far I’ve come since I started. A big highlight has been getting the chance to work at major tournaments like The Open, the Bahrain Championship, and the LIV Golf JCB event. These were high-pressure environments, but I embraced the challenge and learned so much. They have been an unforgettable part of my journey so far.

Weather is a major challenge, from heavy rain that can flood the course, to extreme dryness that can damage turf. We’ve also had to respond to course damage quickly and effectively.

Technology plays a big part in our work. One example is the POGO moisture meter. It uses GPS to read soil moisture levels, helping us decide when and where to irrigate. It helps us manage water sustainably while keeping the turf healthy.

Greenkeeping is increasingly focused on sustainability. We manage water usage carefully, protect and promote wildlife habitats, reduce chemical use, and work with nature to maintain the course. A lot of our work supports the environment as well as the sport.

Greenkeeping in Scotland is a real privilege as it’s the home of golf, so the standards and expectations are high. The weather can be unpredictable, but it pushes you to become a better, more adaptable greenkeeper.

It’s such a rewarding and enjoyable job. If you enjoy being outdoors, love golf, and want a hands-on, meaningful career, greenkeeping ticks every box. The opportunities are huge if you put the work in.

I’m starting an HNC in golf course management soon, and I’d love to keep progressing. I’m particularly keen to gain more experience at top level tournaments. Long-term, I’d love to move into management or leadership within greenkeeping and keep pushing myself to the next level.

And finally, I’d like to say how grateful I am for the recognition I’ve received through Lantra Scotland’s ALBAS. Being an award winner has been an incredible experience as it’s boosted my confidence and opened doors for me in the industry. It’s helped me connect with others in the profession and made me even more determined to keep improving and learning.”
