I started my career in Agriculture working at the bottom of the ladder assisting with a fairly large dairy herd, (it was large at the time but probably considered to be small today). I went on to study for an HND in Agriculture at the West of Scotland Agricultural College from 1973 till 1976. On leaving college I went into Farm Management, initially working single handed and finally with 35 full time staff under my control.
My time in Farm Management covered many aspects of agriculture from the practical hands on to completely hands off dealing with Budgets and accounts on a monthly basis. Most of my knowledge has been gathered through involvement in large farm business practice with training days looking to aid in professional development.
I have worked with HR staff, accounts staff, Scottish Government staff in local and Head Offices, Health and Safety officers and Business Managers involved with other Rural linked businesses.
Having been involved in farming for 40 years before turning to advisory work I prefer to take a practical approach to problem solving. This approach can help when dealing with farmers as I am able to speak the language.
